Humana, Humana Foundation, and KaBOOM! Announce Three-Year Partnership
to Build nearly 40 Playgrounds across the Country Representing $6 Million
Investment
New partnership supports Humana’s commitment to lifelong
well-being for people of all ages
LOUISVILLE,
Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Humana Inc.
(NYSE: HUM), one of the nation’s leading health care and well-being companies,
and its Foundation
today announced a three-year partnership with KaBOOM!
to build 39 playgrounds in communities across the country. The partnership
represents a $6 million investment by Humana and The Humana Foundation to
promote lifelong well-being for people of all ages. KaBOOM! is an award-winning
national nonprofit that creates play spaces through the participation and
leadership of communities and partners.
“We’re committed to helping create lasting impact on our
communities and to encourage adoption of healthy lifestyles among generations
for years to come.”
Many of the
play spaces will have a multi-generational focus, encouraging all community
members to participate in fun and healthy activities.
“At Humana,
we believe in making fun things healthy and healthy things fun. Through this
playground partnership with KaBOOM!, we’re offering families an opportunity to
enjoy physical activity and a stronger sense of belonging where they live,
work, and play,” said Michael B. McCallister, Humana’s Chairman of the Board
and Chief Executive Officer. “We’re committed to helping create lasting impact
on our communities and to encourage adoption of healthy lifestyles among
generations for years to come.”
The
playgrounds built by Humana, the Humana Foundation, and KaBOOM! will include
senior-focused and multi-generational elements, such as fitness stations,
walking paths, or community gardens to encourage a healthy diet and promote
good posture, balance and flexibility. They will also feature traditional
kid-friendly equipment for a space truly for people of all ages to play and
gather for family picnics, reunions and other activities.
Additionally,
the Humana Foundation will sponsor KaBOOM!’s Playful City initiative, a program
honoring cities and towns that make play a priority and use innovative
approaches to get children active, playing, and healthy. The Foundation also
will fund a research study to evaluate the importance and impact of play on an
individual’s well-being.
"Partnering
with Humana gives KaBOOM! the capability to continue providing playgrounds that
encourage activity in kids, adults and seniors,” said KaBOOM! CEO, Darell
Hammond. “These playgrounds we’re building will increase community interaction
across generations, while providing a space for families to be active
together."
Humana and
KaBOOM! first partnered in 2011 to build playgrounds in nine communities across
the country including Lauderdale, FL; Seattle; New Orleans; Greensboro, N.C.;
Albuquerque, N.M.; Tucson, Ariz.; Nashville; Orlando; and San Antonio. This
year, the organizations built playgrounds in Alburnett, Iowa and in Thermal,
Calif., as part of the Humana Challenge golf tournament. They also will build
playgrounds in Tampa, FL and Charlotte, N.C. as part of the 2012 Democratic and
Republican National Conventions.

About KaBOOM!
KaBOOM! is
the national non-profit dedicated to saving play. Children today spend less
time playing outdoors than any previous generation, a fact that is having
disastrous consequences on their health, achievement levels, and overall
well-being. To fight this play deficit, social entrepreneur Darell Hammond
founded non-profit KaBOOM! in 1996 in Washington, D.C. with a vision of
creating a great place to play within walking distance of every child in
America. Since then, KaBOOM! has mapped over 89,000 places to play, built more
than 2,100 playgrounds, and successfully advocated for play policies in
hundreds of cities across the country. KaBOOM! also provides communities with
online tools to self-organize and take action to support play on both a local
and national level. Hammond chronicles the founding of the organization and the
importance of the cause of play in his The New York Times Best
Seller KaBOOM!: How One
Man Built a Movement to Save Play. The book details how
businesses and communities can work together to save play for children across
the country. All author proceeds support KaBOOM!. Headquartered in Washington,
D.C., KaBOOM! also has offices in Chicago and San Mateo, Calif. For more
